I am a Junior Web Developer with experience building and customizing digital experiences. In 2023, I transitioned from the fitness industry to pursue my passion for technology. I enjoy solving problems, creating intuitive interfaces, and building tools that make people’s lives easier.
I have worked on projects with Origin Brand Merch, gaining hands-on experience in developing and enhancing digital experiences. Previously, I also gained valuable experience as a Developer Intern at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and completed the HeadStarter AI Software Engineering Fellowship. As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into software development, it is important to use these tools responsibly while maintaining integrity, accountability, and respect for others' work.
I reflected on the ethical use of AI tools such as ChatGPT when writing code. While AI can improve productivity and help developers learn new concepts, I questioned whether some generated code could be based on another developer's work without proper attribution. This raised concerns about academic honesty, intellectual property, and my responsibility as a future software engineer.
Instead of copying AI-generated code without understanding its origin, I would use ChatGPT as a learning assistant rather than a replacement for my own work. I would study the suggested solution, verify that I understand how it works, modify it when appropriate, and review it for correctness, security, and originality before including it in my projects.
When appropriate, I would also disclose my use of AI tools according to academic or workplace expectations.
This approach allows developers to benefit from AI while maintaining academic and professional integrity. It promotes deeper learning, reduces the risk of unintentionally copying another person's work, and encourages developers to take responsibility for the software they create.
By understanding and reviewing AI-generated code before using it, developers build trust with teammates, employers, and users while continuing to improve their own programming skills.
This ethical reflection reinforces my three guiding principles. Seeking the Lord first reminds me to choose integrity over convenience. Learning with diligence encourages me to use AI as a tool to strengthen my own understanding rather than replace genuine learning. Serving others through my talents means developing software honestly and responsibly so that the technology I create can positively impact those who use it.
